車を止めて看板の奥に入ると、廃校をリノベーションして作られた工房が見えてくる。かつて校庭だった広場にはテントが張られ、カナディアンカヌーが2槽並べて置かれている。さらにアメリカの砂漠地帯のロードサイドにあるような、コンクリートむき出しの建物が隣接している。
まるで異国を旅しているような錯覚を感じるのと同時に、懐かしさがこみ上げてくるのは、ずっと心の中で憧れていた空間が、見事に再現されているからなのかもしれない。
キャンバスや革を使ったバッグや小物のブランド、シュペリオールレイバーのプロダクトは、この場所で作られている。 黒ずんだ木の床や木枠の窓にかつて小学校だった面影を感じる工房の中には、革の抜きや型押しをするための機械やミシンなどが並んでいる。どれも長い年月にわたり丁寧に使い込まれた道具が持つ、味わいと風格を感じる。中央にあるテーブルの前では、若い職人たちが手際よく、手作業で製品を作り上げていく。
シュペリオールレイバーを岡山市の市街地で立ち上げた河合さんは、ものづくりの工程をできる限り自分たちの手で行いたいと考え、工場となるスペースを探していた。そして、その場所は市街地ではなく、特別な場所でありたいと考えていた。
愛犬が自由に走り回ることができて、そこを訪れた人たちが感動し、喜んでもらえるような場所がいい。終戦直後に小学校の分校として建てられ、高度経済成長を経て1991年にその役目を終えたこの廃校を見つけた時、河合さんはまさに理想的な場所だと思った。
実際に、2012年にこのNAP VILLAGEを立ち上げてから、国内外からこの場所を訪れる人が増えたと河合さんは言う。旅先としてここを訪れた使い手がものづくりの現場を見ることで、さらに愛着を持って使うようになり、作り手は使う人が喜ぶ姿を見て、より仕事への愛情と誇りを増していく。ここでは、そんな使い手と作り手の幸せな出会いが数多く生まれている。
河合さんにとって、このNAP VILLAGEはものづくりの現場であり、発想の拠点であり、交流の場であり、同時に家族が暮らす家でもある。
河合さんにこれからのことを聞くと、こう答えてくれた。
「ここを起点に、これからは積極的に旅をしていきたい。トラベラーズノートとの出会いが、それをより後押しさせてくれたんです」
ここに移ってから生まれた子どもたちが大きくなってきたのとあわせて、トラベラーズノートを使うようになって、もっと旅をしたいと考えるようになったそうだ。
革の表紙にはオリジナルのワッペンが貼られ、リフィルには自分のブランドのスタンプやステッカーでカスタマイズされた河合さんのトラベラーズノートは、まさにシュペリオールレイバー仕様になっている。中には新しいプロダクトのスケッチやイベントのアイデアとともに、子どもの写真が挟まれ、旅先の記録も綴られている。仕事とプライベートの境を超えて、河合さんの生活が詰まったノートになっている。
このトラベラーズノートとともに趣味のフィルム写真を撮るために海外へ旅に出たり、ヴィンテージのキャンピングカーを手に入れて国内を巡ったりする。河合さんは今、そんなことを密かに企んでいる。
Drive about an hour inland from Okayama Station and you’ll reach a remote mountain area. The road is narrow with mountains and forest all around you and you’ll have to drive for a while before you see any other cars. Around a gentle bend in a road like this, I come to a wooden sign with “NAP VILLAGE” hand-painted on it.
I park my car and walk beyond the sign, where I find a studio remodeled from an old school building. The school grounds have been turned into a courtyard where a tent has been pitched and two Canadian canoes lie side by side. Next to the courtyard is a bare concrete building like the ones by the roadside in the American deserts.
The scene makes me feel like I’m visiting a foreign country, yet fills me with nostalgia too. Maybe it’s because it taps into something I’ve always longed for.
This is the studio of THE SUPERIOR LABOR, a brand that makes bags and accessories out of materials such as canvas and leather. Vestiges of the building’s previous life as a school can be seen in the blackened woof floors and window frames, juxtaposed against equipment such as leather cutters, embossing machinery and sewing machines. You can tell from looking at the equipment that it has been used carefully for a long time. Young craftspeople stand in front of a table in the center, deftly crafting products by hand.
THE SUPERIOR LABOR was opened in downtown Okayama City by Makoto Kawai. When Mr. Kawai looked for a space for THE SUPERIOR LABOR’s studio, he knew that he wanted to do as much of the manufacturing process as possible by hand, and that he did not want the factory to be downtown-he wanted it to be somewhere special.
Mr. Kawai wanted a place where his beloved dogs could run free, and which would amaze visitors and make them happy. The school was built when a local elementary school was divided into two shortly after World War II, and closed in 1991 because it no longer had a purpose to serve after Japan’s high economic growth. When it caught Mr. Kawai’s eye, he knew that he had found just the right place.
And Mr. Kawai is not the only one who felt that way-he says that since NAP VILLAGE opened in 2012, they have received more visitors, from throughout Japan and even overseas. When customers travel here and see where the products are made, they love THE SUPERIOR LABOR even more, and when the craftspeople see these customers’ joy, it gives them even more love and pride in their job. This place has led to many happy encounters between customers and the craftspeople.
To Mr. Kawai, NAP VILLAGE is a manufacturing site, a fountain of ideas, a place where people can connect and his family home, all rolled into one.
When asked about his future plans, Mr. Kawai says “I want to actively travel in future, with NAP VILLAGE as a base. Encountering TRAVELER’S notebook like this has inspired me even more.”
Mr. Kawai had children after he moved here, and as they have grown older, he has begun using TRAVELER’S notebook and wants to travel more.
Mr. Kawai has customized his TRAVELER’S notebook with an original emblem on the leather cover and his own brand of stamps and stickers on the refill pages-it looks like a THE SUPERIOR LABOR product in itself. Inside, sketches of new products and ideas for events vie for space with photos of Mr. Kawai’s children and memories of travel destinations. This TRAVELER’S notebook chronicles Mr. Kawai’s life-professional and personal.
Mr. Kawai is quietly planning all kinds of things to do with his TRAVELER’S notebook-overseas vacations where he will pursue his hobby of film photography, and a trip around Japan in a vintage camper van.

He worked as a mechanic, a buyer of vintage clothing and the manager of a pet supplies store before opening THE SUPERIOR LABOR in the spring/summer season of 2007.
As a child, Mr. Kawai played with various tools at his grandfather's small factory. He draws on this and his experience as a mechanic and vintage clothing buyer when designing products for THE SUPERIOR LABOR, and his policy of "We take pride in craftsmanship and never skimp on time and effort" lies at the heart of everything the company does.
