ノートを前にすれば自由を感じたし、ノートは他人の評価を気にしないで間違いを試すことができる唯一の場所だった。ノートの上なら間違いを正解にすることだってできた。今でもノートは僕にとって、素晴らしい何かを求めていつまでも飽きることなく向かいあうことができる場所であり続けている。
普段、僕はさまざまなプロジェクトを同時に抱えながら仕事をしている。
例えば、セラミックのオブジェを制作してその本を作る仕事をしながら、テキスタイルでオブジェを制作してその写真を撮ったり、さらに詩を書き、その詩を元に絵を描いたり……、同時進行でいろいろな仕事を抱えている。
そんな僕がトラベラーズノートに最初に出会った時、「これだ！」と思った。
プロジェクトごとに分けた複数のノートを、革カバーにセットしてまとめて持ち歩くことができる。そのことを発見した時に夢が実現したような気持ちになり、使うほどにそのノートに惚れ込んでいった。
僕にとって言葉を書き記し、絵を描くことは毎日の暮らしに欠かせないこと。仕事で旅をすることが多いけれど、もちろん旅の移動中でもノートに向かっている。今ではトラベラーズノートは、いつも僕に付き添ってくれるスタジオのような存在になっている。
最近、僕はテキスタイルを使ったオブジェ作りに多くの時間を割いている。
そのプロセスにもトラベラーズノートは欠かせない存在だ。例えば、絵の具を塗りながら布に草木染めをする時の色をイメージしたり、オブジェの形を描いたり、インスピレーションを与えてくれるような写真を貼ったり、コンセプトとなる言葉を書き留めたり、トラベラーズノートには、その制作プロセスに必要なことがすべて一冊にまとまっている。
そのプロセスこそがアートなのだ。作品を制作することで、自分自身が変わっていくこともまたアートの力だと僕は考えている。僕はひとつの作品が完成すると、それがうまくいけばいくほど別の人間になったような気持ちになる。だからこそプロセスがとても大事であり、そのすべてのプロセスを僕はノートに記録をしている。
そんなノートは、僕にとって自分の作品と同じくらい重要なものだと考えている。
いつか僕が使ったすべてのトラベラーズノートを展示する機会を持ちたいと思っている。そこには僕の言葉、スケッチ、アイデアがたくさんつまっている。例えば、紙の上にただ何本かの線が描かれただけのものであっても、僕にとってそれは作品と同じくらい価値があるものなのだ。
今、僕らの住む世界はとても速いスピードで動いている。そんな世界でも僕らは自由にゆっくりものごとを考えることができる、平穏な場所を探している。トラベラーズノートは、そんな理想的な場所を与えてくれる存在になっている。
I’ve always carried a notebook with me for as long as I can remember.
Since I was a child, notebooks have been the place where I feel free. The only place where I can make mistakes without being judged. The place where the mistakes can become the answer. A place where you can succumb to the flow without expecting anything and getting the best.
I’m always working on so many different projects at the same time. From my ceramics to my books, from my new textile pieces to my photos, from my poems to my drawings.
When I encountered TRAVELER’S notebook for the first time, it was like a dream come true. I fell in love with the idea of being able to bring together different notebooks for different projects.
I write and draw every day. It’s what I have always done no matter where I am. Because of my work I’m always traveling. My TRAVELER’S notebook is truly my studio, but one that always comes with me.
Lately, I’ve been working a lot more on my textile pieces. TRAVELER’S notebook gives me all I need for the process: organization of the test colors from my natural dyes, the sketches for the forms, the pictures for the inspiration, the poems with the concepts. Art is about process-about transforming yourself as you work on a piece. For me, a piece is good when I have become a different person upon its completion. It’s why the process is the most important part, and the only way I found to save all this process is in my notebooks.
I truly consider my notebooks to be just as important as my completed art.
I dream that I will someday to have the chance to show all my TRAVELER’S notebooks with all the concepts, sketches and ideas. Because to me, some of them, even if they are just a few lines on a piece of paper, have the same value as the final piece.
I think about the fast-paced world we live in these days. For those that are looking for some calm, a space to be free and think. For those people, notebooks are a beautiful place to exist.
画集や絵本を数多く出版。また陶器によるオブジェや写真、壁画なども制作。近年はテキスタイルを素材としたアート作品や彫像の制作に集中している。スペイン以外にもメキシコ、ロサンゼルス、ミラノ、マンチェスターなど、世界中で壁画の制作や個展を開催。
セラミック作品の多くは、古くから陶器作りの歴史を持ち、彼の出身地でもあるタラベラのセラミックセンターの協力のもと制作。また、ヒーリング・ドローイングと呼ばれる路上での表現活動や小説、詩集なども出版するなど、幅広い表現活動を行なっている。
He has published many books with his own text and art. He also creates ceramics, photography, murals, and in recent years, has focused on artistic endeavors around woven textiles and sculptures. He has had exhibitions and made murals in Spain as well as locations around the world, including Mexico, Los Angeles, Milan and Manchester.
Many of his ceramic pieces are made in cooperation with the Ceramic Center of Talavera, a long-established pottery workshop in his hometown. He actively pursues a wide range of artistic expression, including street performance called "The healing drawings" as well as publishing short stories and poetry anthologies.
